This past year (2020-2021) I completed the Vanguard Gap Year Program. (Read why I chose Vanguard here!)
When I first moved to HoneyRock, I was apprehensive about living in the woods for a year. The thought of escaping to the woods was more frightening than exciting. Little did I know how nice the rooms were, or how much I would learn to love the outdoors and beautiful environment of the Northwoods. I challenged myself to try new things and grew to love activities like hiking, kayaking, and intense Broomball games. HoneyRock taught me to listen for the Lord in everyday moments- in the lapping of water against the shore and wind blowing through the trees. Now, I wish I could do it all again! I am so grateful for all of the ways I was able to experience creation during my time as a Vanguard.
During their time at HoneyRock, Vanguard Gap Year students live in one of two dorm-style buildings, Loberg Lodge or the newly renovated Voyageur Center. Both buildings have rooms with 2-4 students and share a common bathroom and lounge.
Loberg Lounge
The shared common space in Loberg Lodge, Loberg Lounge, is a shared co-ed space. It's a place of gathering. Bright and cozy, it has a fireplace, couch, table, and kitchenette. I remember writing letters on the couch, making late night s'mores in the fireplace, and how there always seemed to be a new puzzle on the table. More importantly, I'll never forget the conversations and laughter that occurred here, and the friendships that resulted.
Vanguard Rooms
The photo below was my little corner of room 101 this past year, which I shared with two roommates. As time went on we covered the walls with art and photos- they never looked this bare again! From late night snacks and devotionals to folding laundry with my roommates and jammin' to the radio, this room holds many memories and was a wonderful place to live.
Bathrooms
More than just a place to wash your hands, these bathrooms are home to shower sing-alongs and early morning conversations when brushing your teeth. Each has three sinks, two showers, and two stalls, with ample storage for toiletries.
